Charlotte Street Foundation 10-year Anniversary Book

Showcasing the work of 56 artists recognized with unrestricted cash grants from the Charlotte Street Foundation (CSF) from 1997 through 2006, 10 is testimony to the mission of the Charlotte Street Foundation: to support and recognize outstanding Kansas City artists and the cultural richness and vitality they bring to our city.

Plans for a Charlotte Street 10 Year Anniversary Book emerged through conversations with past Charlotte Street Awards recipients, our committee of Awards Advisors, and other arts and community leaders, who overwhelmingly identified a publication as the most effective, enduring, and resonant means of recognizing and leveraging the accomplishments of the Charlotte Street Foundation and the artists who have received Charlotte Street Awards over the past decade. Since launching in 1997, Charlotte Street has annually supported outstanding Kansas City based artists with unrestricted cash grants, with a total of $352,500 distributed.

At the center of the book content are a series of two-page spreads on each artist, including color images of recent work and narrative texts written by leading Kansas City area curators and academics, including Jan Schall, Sanders Sosland Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; David Cateforis, Professor of Art History, University of Kansas; James Martin, Curator, Sprint Nextel Art Collection; Stacy Switzer, Artistic Director, Grand Arts; Raechell Smith, Director, H&R Block Artspace at Kansas City Art Institute; Heather Lustfeldt, Assistant Curator, H&R Block Artspace at Kansas City Art Institute; Elizabeth Kirsch, art historian; Mark Spencer, Director of the Creative Library, Hallmark; and Kate Hackman, Assistant Director, Charlotte Street Foundation.

The book also feature two commissioned essays and an introduction by Charlotte Street Founder/Director David Hughes. One essay, by New York writer Peter von Zegeiser -- who wrote about the Kansas City art scene for Art in America a decade ago -- draws on several recent visits to Kansas City to explore the character and evolution of the community and the role the Charlotte Street Foundation has played within it. The other, by emerging artist and cultural critic Matt Wycoff, is driven by extensive interviews conducted with nearly all of the past Award recipients. Additionally, “10” features an “Artists Index” with biographical information, selected exhibition histories, and selected bibliographies for all artists, along with their portraits.

Michelle Bolton King, Bolton King Communications and former Marketing Communications Manager for the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, is Editor of the book, which was designed by Mary Lou Brous, Global Brand Visual Identity Manager for Accenture and former Joyce C. Hall Distinguished Professor of Design at the Kansas City Art Institute. The 176 page “coffee table” book was printed in an edition of 3500.

“10” is available for purchase for $30 at bookstores, museum shops and galleries including Rainy Day Books, the Kemper Museum of Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the JCCC Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Dolphin Gallery, Grand Arts and Paragraph.
